Toshiba drives on

Toshiba has maintained its strong momentum in notebook sales growth across the Middle East in the second quarter of 2006, according to the vendor. Citing IDC data, Toshiba claims to have grown the number of notebooks it sold into the market by 91% year-on-year to 65,638 units.

Toshiba has maintained its strong momentum in notebook sales growth across the Middle East in the second quarter of 2006, according to the vendor. Citing IDC data, Toshiba claims to have grown the number of notebooks it sold into the market by 91% year-on-year to 65,638 units. This compares to an overall rise in units sold of 54% to 341,869. According to Toshiba, it now holds the sales top spot in Egypt, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar. “For the seventh quarter in a row, Toshiba has experienced growth ahead of the average market rise in its notebook sales across the Middle East,” said Ahmed Khalil, Toshiba general manager for the Middle East and Africa. “In some of the key regional markets, Toshiba is experiencing growth well above its nearest rivals placing it as the leading notebook brand in those respective countries.” “The combination of Toshiba’s strategy of targeting specific markets during the quarter and the dedication and hard work put in by my colleagues together with Toshiba’s channel partners has proved very effective,” he added. Toshiba launched its Qosmio notebook platform with HD-DVD ROM at the end of March, a move that the vendor claims not only achieved significant sales but also raised awareness for other notebooks in Toshiba’s range. “The Qosmio launch had a significant impact on the market,” said Khalil. “The innovative design concept and features of the Qosmio captured the attention of our key customers and reaffirmed Toshiba’s commitment to quality with the result that Toshiba as a notebook brand is featuring on more pre-qualified tender lists than ever before.” According to statistics supplied by IDC, Egypt was the fastest growing notebook market in the region, with unit sales doubling year-on-year in the second quarter to 27,777 units. However, despite recording the largest percentage rise, Egypt could not contend with the sheer volume of product shipped into the region’s two largest markets for notebooks: the UAE and Saudi Arabia. In the second quarter a massive 126,466 notebooks were sold in the UAE channel — a 54% jump from the figure one year ago. Likewise, Saudi Arabia also witnessed impressive growth rates as sales soared 49% in the second quarter to 117,242 units. However, the rise in sales in Saudi Arabia was tempered by fears in the second quarter that channel inventory levels rose to unhealthy levels on the back of sell-in for the Gitex Saudi Arabia period. Notebook shipments in Kuwait hit 20,088 in the second quarter according to IDC with shipments in Qatar, Bahrain and Egypt hitting 8,048, 5143, and 4,221 respectively. Unit shipments in the rest of the Middle East totalled 32,884 units.
