The Al Bustan Rotana in Dubai is currently considering a total hotel renovation, and if the project gets the green light then the Bodylines leisure centre could soon be on the way to achieving spa status, according to Jacques Reynders, recreation manager at the hotel. Bodylines, which currently boasts around 450 regular members plus hotel users, has proved a successful component to the hotel, and a cash injection could see the facility adding treatment rooms for facials, massage and Ayurvedic treatments. The leisure club has already resurfaced its tennis courts and invested in a new Star Trac cardiovascular series and Nautilus resistance range in recent months. “Some 20% of our hotel guests use our facilities,” said Reynders. “We are currently in discussions with the owners on the renovation, and one plan is to change Bodylines into a mini spa. I feel we are a bit outdated in this respect, and we need to upgrade to follow the standards of other hotels. We need to keep on upgrading.” Reynders is currently competitor shopping, and has been visiting spa facilities at some of Dubai’s five-star hotels. “I must say that I have not been that impressed with some of the facilities,” he admits. Providing a unique selling point is a must for a successful spa in Dubai, and Reynders may have found the perfect niche market if he decides to really make the Al Bustana Rotana spa a ‘mini’ spa. Dedicated children’s facilities are just one idea Reynders is considering. “I would like to see more people get involved in fitness. And I would like to see more people getting active from an early age,” he told Leisure Manager Middle East. “In South Africa we have complete mini gyms in the kid’s club, with units working with air pressure, not weights. Here, there are few hotels that have kid’s activities that children will really enjoy,” he remarked.
