Dutco Balfour Beatty Construction Group (DBBCG) has scooped the second of two massive road deals in Dubai worth more than US $190 million (AED700 million) from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The latest package will see the contractor carry out a comprehensive package of improvements to Sheikh Zayed Road through the construction of the Jumeirah Lake Towers Interchange — otherwise known as ‘Interchange Five and a Half’. The project involves the construction of five elevated viaducts, a three-span bridge across the existing Dubai Marina, associated service roads and other related infrastructure. “It is one of the biggest projects we have ever won in Dubai,” said DBBCG general manager, Grahame McCaig. The project, which is due for completion in September 2008, will not only provide access to both Jumeirah Lake Towers residential development and the Dubai Marina, but will also assist with improving the traffic flow on the main thoroughfare to Dubai. This follows an earlier deal, which will see DBBCG carry out the widening of Emirates Road from three lanes to five in each direction over a distance of 35km, including auxiliary lanes and ramps. The project is due for completion in September 2007. The Emirates Road extends from the Abu Dhabi border to Sharjah, bypassing the centre of Dubai. DBBCG saw off competition from Emirates Road Contracting and Wade Adams to land the lucrative contract. The RTA has launched a $12 billion spending plan which will see a raft of improvements made to Dubai’s congested road network between now and 2020. It will include the construction of roads totalling about 500km in length with 95 new interchanges planned as well as improvements to a number of existing interchanges.
