Hazam Bazan, who recently resigned as HP Middle East solutions provider organisation (SPO) manager, is joining rival IT hardware giant Dell’s Middle East operation. Bazan’s appointment and details of his new role at Dell will be formally announced later this week. Bazan’s appointment, which was confirmed today by a Middle East PR spokesperson for Dell, is testament to the importance of the channel as a route-to-market for the vendor in this region. Despite its global reputation for embracing a direct sales strategy, Dell continues to operate an indirect model in the Middle East working through distributors, VARs and retailers — a model that underlines the importance of the channel to all vendors attempting to gain market share in the region. Bazan’s career in the IT industry began in Egypt working as a systems engineer for an IBM partner. He then moved to Bahrain and then to Abu Dhabi with GBM before joining Compaq in 1997. Bazan held several different roles with Compaq prior to the merger with HP where he rose through the ranks to become SPO manager for the Middle East. Speaking in an earlier interview with Channel Arabic — prior to the news that he was set to join Dell — Bazan explained his reasons for deciding that the time was right to leave HP: “It was my personal decision. I think it is time to find a new challenge and a new opportunity. I was asked to stay, but the decision was made. I have spent almost nine years with HP where I was in charge of various positions. I learnt a great deal at HP and always gave my best.” “I have a couple of opportunities but I have yet to make a decision on my next role,” continued Bazan. “I will make sure that it is something that allows me to develop new skills and learn new things as well.” Having now decided on his new role, Bazan will bring a wealth of channel and distribution expertise to Dell’s Middle East operation. In the wake of Bazan's departure from HP, Salim Ziade has been appointed as the solutions provider organisation (SPO) manager for the Middle East. Ziade previously served as commercial and consumer category manager for HP personal systems group (PSG) in the Middle East.
