Omantel has signed an agreement with Omani e-Commerce company, Tejari Oman, to provide its electronic payment solution. Known as “Tejari Transact”, the technology is a set of commercial solutions over the internet, which guarantees flexibility as well as reducing purchasing costs. According to Omantel executive president Mohammed Al-Wohaibi, the Oman incumbent and fixed-line monopoly holder hopes to drive e-business with the new deployment. "It is a well known fact that telecommunications industry is witnessing huge transformation and changes in addition to the fact that it is tremendously dynamic. Therefore, there is a constant need to conduct regular updates for all strategies, measures and processes,” said Al-Wohaibi. He added that solutions from Tejari would help streamline purchase processes, save time and rationalise costs. Speaking to CommsMEA, Al-Wohaibi described the drive to increase broadband penetration across Oman, which started with an initiative last year that saw an almost 300% rise in subscribers to 10,000 DSL lines. With Oman’s varied and often mountainous terrain, he said a number of wireless technologies were being considered. “To have an alternative to DSL (in remote areas) we’re working with broadband over VSAT technology. I think this is going to be around soon. We’re also working on wireless broadband over WLL (wireless local loop) and WiFi,” he said, adding that WLL will target the rural areas, reaching around 200 villages across the country.
