Al Jazeera International, the forthcoming 24-hour news and current affairs channel headquartered in Doha, is equipping its journalists with Quicklink’s laptop video transmission system. The software technology will enable the journalists to transmit live and edited reports over any IP network, including Inmarsat’s new BGAN satellite system. The Quicklink solution will also offer the potential for anyone with a 3G cameraphone, including TV correspondents and members of the public, to transmit live to Al Jazeera International. “This is one of the most powerful newsgathering tools on the market today,” said Quicklink’s managing director, Richard Bolton. “We’re very pleased that Al Jazeera International has opted to invest in it. Television newsgathering is undergoing fundamental changes insofar as journalists can transmit their reports back to the studio using an increasing variety of networks and software tools. At Quicklink, we pride ourselves on keeping in front of these technological advances and having solutions ready for when broadcasters decide to migrate to the latest technology.” Quicklink’s encoding and transmission system has been adopted by broadcasters in Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. The software-based system is designed to be easy to use, allowing TV correspondents to transmit information while on location. It uses a compression technology designed to maintain visual quality. “This partnership is our latest step in setting technical as well as journalistic standards,” said Nigel Parsons, managing director, Al Jazeera International. “Al Jazeera International is leading the way, using tomorrow’s technology to bring the world a uniquely fresh perspective on world news.”
