Qatar Telecom, a.k.a. Qtel, has unveiled new ‘free-to-connect’ GPRS and 3G mobile internet services for its pre- and post-paid mobile phone customers. Qtel’s new ‘Mobile Internet’ service offers internet and WAP website browsing on compatible mobile phones and can be used by both its pre-paid (‘Hala’) and post-paid customers. While access to internet and WAP sites will be charged at a rate of 1dh/1KB (approximately 10 QR per megabyte of data, or QR10 to browse roughly 160 WAP pages), Qtel is not imposing any additional subscription or connection charges. In addition, customers will be able to access and navigate around Qtel’s ‘Freedom’ WAP entertainment portal free of charge, paying only for their actual purchases. Qtel customers can access this new mobile internet service over both Qtel’s 3G and GPRS networks, with the same pricing applying across both networks. However, Qtel is advising users that those using 3G handsets within Qtel’s 3G network coverage area will receive a better browsing and download experience (because Qtel’s 3G network offers data access speeds up to eight times faster than those achievable over Qtel’s GSM/GPRS network). Furthermore, mobile surfers on Qtel’s 3G network will be able to access the internet/WAP and make voice calls simultaneously, which is not possible over GPRS. To access internet/WAP sites from their GPRS or 3G mobile handsets, customers just need to click the ‘Web’ icon on their handset’s function menu, type in a URL and press OK. Customers wanting to access Qtel’s Freedom WAP entertainment Portal should head over to www.freedom.com.qa. Qtel’s existing ‘Mobinet’ service, which offers internet and/or WAP web access to post-paid customers will continue to exist, in parallel with the new offering.
