Skybox Security and Internet Security Systems (ISS) have released a new tool to test intrusion prevention systems in a virtual environment. The companies have built the IPS testing capability into a new version of Skybox’s View Suite software, as part of a wider alliance between the organisations. “The majority of network administrators do not have a good visualisation of what the network looks like,” said Greg Adams, vice president of product management, ISS. “Skybox View's unique virtual modelling and simulation capability, when used in combination with the ISS Proventia Network Intrusion Prevention System, helps customers make risk-based decisions about where to deploy IPS and how the positioning of IPS technology can alter an organisation’s security posture for the better.” The IPS modelling tool will allow network and security managers to test various scenarios for configuring an IPS, looking at variables such as location, specific configuration and blocking characteristics. Administrators can also run attack simulations and generate various metrics to help analyse and predict how an IPS will behave in the real world. “By applying analytics, IPS products can now be tuned to take full advantage of their intended prevention mode with full confidence, increasing their value to an organization’s overall security risk management programme - while also generating risk metrics necessary for business and compliance validation,” said Gidi Cohen, chief strategy officer for Skybox Security. The IPS modelling component of the Skybox View Suite is available now. Existing customers can obtain the new module at no additional cost.
