Toshiba is developing a taste for teaming up with mobile phone distributors. Hot on the heels of striking a deal with i2 for Iraq and Yemen, Toshiba has now signed a distribution agreement with Cellucom covering the fast-growing Qatari market. Under the terms of the deal, Cellucom will distribute Toshiba’s portfolio of notebooks and related accessories across the country. Ahmed Khalil, general manager for Toshiba Middle East and Africa claimed that it was Cellucom’s understanding of the regional market and their approach to distribution that contributed to the decision. “We have always enjoyed a strong and productive association with Cellucom and this agreement underlines our mutual commitment to developing the market for Toshiba products and to bringing to regional consumers leading-edge technology products,” said Khalil. According to Toshiba, Cellucom’s impressive commitment to customer service could result in similar deals being struck for other regions. In less than a decade, Cellucom has expanded from a single store to a specialised retail chain with a footprint of more than 100 stores. Arun Nagar, managing director at Cellucom, said: “We are committed to providing the best quality of pre-sales and after sales service to the brands we tie up with. In the emerging business model it’s most convenient to bring the manufacturer as close to the consumer as possible. Cellucom brings that advantage to Toshiba, using the power of the retail infrastructure in the region.” Cellucom plans to kick off a major campaign aimed at developing the Toshiba channel in Qatar during the next few months. “We will be reaching deeper pockets of Qatar and expanding our dealer base across the country,” added Nagar. “Toshiba’s strong marketing arm, headed by Mohamed Bensaid, sales and marketing manager GCC, will support these initiatives. Our goal is to expand Toshiba’s share in Qatar from the present 17% to 25% in our first year.”
