Following the introduction of its new internet packages last month, Bahraini telco Batelco has announced that it intends to introduce an entry-level, BD5 (US $13) per month package next, aimed squarely at users on low incomes. Batelco invited representatives from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), Ministries, consumer groups and other interested parties to attend a working meeting held yesterday on Wednesday, June 7. The purpose of this get-together was to discuss the feasibility of introducing such an internet package, which would offer a connection speed of 128Kbps, combined with a monthly data threshold of 2Gbytes. “All residents should benefit from access to information and knowledge available via the internet. Such internet access should be as widespread as the basic telephone service throughout the Kingdom,” said Batelco’s chief executive, Peter Kaliaropoulos “We have repeatedly stated that Batelco is committed to delivering lower internet prices to all residents of Bahrain. We also need to cater for those in our society who do not have the ability to pay full prices,” he explained, adding that Batelco wants to introduce such an offering “almost immediately”. Kaliaropoulos also asserted that the most crucial aspect is the plan’s regulatory approval by the TRA. Speaking to Windows today, the general manager of Batelco’s corporate affairs and group corporate secretary, Ahmed Al Janahi, confirmed that Batelco will now submit details of its proposed cut-price net access package, with full backing documentation, to the TRA, which should in turn respond within 45 days to confirm or deny the package’s go-ahead.
