The Syrian Embassy has named the six construction workers who died after a fire broke out in a tower block in Doha in the early hours of Tuesday 23 May. The men — Noori Al Abdullah, Turki Al Abdullah, Yasser Ahmed Deeb, Ala Adnan Ismail, Saleh Sabri Al Hassan and Hassaan Hanshal — perished while working on the 32-storey building under construction in West Bay, near the city centre. The fire is believed to have started in the basement, which is being developed into a car park, and soon spread to the two upper floors of the tower. It is thought the blaze was caused by an electric short circuit. The bodies of three of the workers were identified through DNA tests, and two of them, Noori and Turki, were brothers. DNA tests could not be carried out on the other three bodies as they were too badly burnt. In a separate incident, over 400 workers escaped after a fire ravaged the Al Nasr Twin Towers, which is also under construction in Doha’s West Bay, on 27 May.
