Mobile sales in 2006 to near 1 billion mark

According to research company Gartner, mobile sales over the first quarter reached 224 million, representing a 23.8% increase on the same period last year.

Worldwide mobile phone sales numbered 224 million units in the first quarter of 2006, according to statistics from research company Gartner. The figure represents a 23.8% increase on the first quarter last year, and has forced Gartner to increase it total yearly sales forecast to 960 million units. Across Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, sale of mobile phones to end users grew 30% over 1Q05, reaching a total of 41.3 million units. Nokia and Motorola took the majority of mobile pie, claiming a 54.3% of total international sales. Nokia remained the preferred brand in Western Europe, Central Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa combined, and Asia, while the Finnish supplier came second behind Motorola in the Americas. Nokia’s total market share was 34%. Motorola’s market share reached 20.3%, its highest percentage since Gartner began tracking the market quarterly in 2001. Samsung recorded a fall in market share, down 1% from a year earlier, to 12.5%. LG came in fourth position with 6.5% of the mobile market, and SonyEricsson fifth with 6.1%. BenQMobile, which now has Siemens Mobile under its wing, recorded a 3.5% share.
