It has to be the funniest stand-off in Dubai’s larger-than-life construction industry. The developer behind the controversial Big Ben tower on Sheikh Zayed Road is hoping time will be on his side to win permission to install a clock face on the building. Earlier this year Construction Week revealed how Dubai Municipality (DM) had given planning consent for the 70-storey tower but refused permission for a clock face modelled on the famous London landmark. Now cheeky contractors have erected a model on the site, which includes the banned clock face. Rasheed Mikati, business development director, ACC, said: “The client has asked us to put the clock on the sign board photo. “We do not know yet if he has full DM approval. But it will be quite a few months until we reach the height of the clock so we’re not really concerned at this point.” ACC is building the US $60 million (AED221 million) tower.
