BlackBerry arrives

Etisalat and Research In Motion (RIM) launched the BlackBerry mobile e-mail service for corporate users last week, claiming it will redefine business mobility in the UAE.

Etisalat and Research In Motion (RIM) launched the BlackBerry mobile e-mail service for corporate users last week, claiming it will redefine business mobility in the UAE. As the first service provider to introduce the BlackBerry wireless platform to the Gulf, Etisalat said it fought for over two years to bring it to the region. BlackBerry has over five million subscribers worldwide, mainly in Europe and the US. BlackBerry devices are mainly used to keep in constant touch with e-mails, sending and receiving, but they also support phone, SMS, internet, organiser and corporate data applications. “With BlackBerry you are always on and always connected,” said Robert Bose, director of RIM Europe, Middle East and Africa, at a press conference announcing the launch. “This is a significant opportunity in one of the world’s fastest growing financial centres,” he went on to add. National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD), Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB), Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), The National Investor (TNI), Emirates Airline and Etisalat itself have been piloting the service for the past two months and will now be using the devices on a full-time basis. “Results from pilot testing show that the market in the UAE is ready for BlackBerry,” said Essa Al Haddad, chief marketing officer, Etisalat.
