Aptec Mobiles has teamed up with mobile phone distribution giant Brightstar to create a new joint venture called Brightec. The two companies expect the new venture to become one of the largest mobile telephony and wireless distributors in the Middle East and Africa. Brightstar will hold a 51% stake in the new venture, which also includes the existing regional operations of Aptec Mobile. The joint venture company, to be named Brightec, provides Brightstar with a strong regional infrastructure to support high growth markets in the Middle East and North Africa. Brightec also owns and operates eight retail outlets in the region. The joint venture headquarters and Brightstar’s Middle East and Africa regional headquarters will be in Dubai. The new company immediately takes ownership of Aptec Mobile in the UAE with its eight retail outlets, distribution, mobile phone service centres and web sales operations. Brightec will leverage Aptec’s presence and expertise in the region with operations in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Turkey, Egypt and Lebanon before the end of 2006. According to industry reports, approximately 80 million wireless devices were sold in 2005 in the Middle East and Africa region. By 2010, this number is expected to nearly triple to 218 million, making it the largest wireless market in the world. R. Marcelo Claure, Brightstar president and CEO, said: "Brightstar has developed an expertise in successfully delivering highly valued distribution and supply chain services to manufacturers and customers in high growth markets. We clearly believe we can offer a strategic advantage to customers in the wireless market in the Middle East and Africa through our strong manufacturer relationships and innovative solutions portfolio." Claure continued: "The Aptec leadership team, their existing infrastructure and our philosophical alignment on how to serve this market were all critical reasons for us to join with Aptec in this venture. We look forward to capitalising on their success and further strengthening and supporting this important market." Brightstar's value to emerging markets includes increasing their access to wireless devices through Brightstar's global relationship with leading manufacturers and its vast distribution network, which increases speed to market and reduces overall product costs. Dr. Ali Baghdadi, CEO at Aptec, commented: "Our alliance with Brightstar brings a new added value to the Middle East, Africa and Turkish markets. By combining Aptec's knowledge and presence in the market with Brightstar's expertise, services and vendor relations, we believe Brightec will make a significant impact in the wireless and telecommunications industries within a short space of time."
