Region's consumer VoIP market worth US $1 billion in three years

The Middle East and African consumer VoIP market will be worth US $1 billion by 2009, according to ABI Research figures quoted by Linksys’s director of sales for the EMEA region, Robert Auci, today.

The Middle East and African consumer VoIP market will be worth US $1 billion by 2009, according to ABI Research figures quoted by Linksys’s director of sales for the EMEA region, Robert Auci, today. Speaking at the home and small business networking vendor’s official launch of its three first ‘draft N’ standard (802.11n) products (a wireless router, gateway and notebook adaptor respectively, Auci explained that - according to the predicted figures in ABI's 'Consumer VoIP Report' - five million consumer subscribers will sign-up to VoIP telephony solutions in the region over the next three years. “With ‘a’ and ‘g’ standard wireless networking products, users have been able to shared the net, and with 'enhanced g’ they could add functions such as wireless print serving,” Auci explained, “‘n’ is the next step, and will allow VoIP, as well as TV streaming, music downloads and more – simultaneously.” According to Auci, the growing rise of broadband penetration in this region, combined with the gradual liberalisation of many telecommunications markets, are key to the growth of VoIP and also increased sales of Linksys’ own VoIP internet related products. “The market is exploding here, which is evident in our sales and ability to penetrate the broadband market,” Auci said. The company’s regional manager, Mohammad Hoda, added: “Our growth in products sales directly correlates with the rise of the number of broadband users in the Middle East and Africa. In the UAE for example, there are double the number of broadband users there were a year ago.” Auci was keen to point out however that Linksys’ VoIP-related products, such as Skype and WiFi phones, were not being pro-actively advertised in territories where VoIP is disallowed, such as the UAE. "We’re waiting for the market to be deregulated," he noted. "Yes you can buy these Linksys products here in the UAE, but we’ve been clear to give a disclaimer saying ‘For Export Only’.
