Young creatives working in the UAE gathered at the International Advertising Association’s headquarters at Dubai Media City last week to fight it out for a place at this year’s Cannes Lions. Teams with members aged 28 or younger, were given a full creative brief in a competition that saw art director and copywriter pairings focusing their creative energies on an issue of social responsibility. Each of the teams had 10 hours to produce a maximum of two print or poster ads. The winning team will travel to the 53rd Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival in June to represent the UAE in the Cannes Lions Young Creative Award. Liam Marshall, general manager of Motivate Val Morgan, the official representative of the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, said the competition provided a showcase for young talent in the region. He added: “It’s difficult to tell what the standards are going to be like this year, but from previous experience I can say that standards have been going up every year. Last year, especially, the quality was really very good.” Judging took place last Thursday by a panel of 30 judges drawn from leading businesses in the UAE. Winners will be presented with gold, silver or bronze trophies at an awards ceremony on Tuesday. Motivate Val Morgan is a joint venture between Motivate Publishing and Val Morgan Cinema Advertising. Based at DMC, the company sells cinema advertising for CineStar and Century Cinemas in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Amman.
