Bahrain TV gets a new look from this month as part of a massive government effort to ditch ‘canned programmes’ and launch fresh local programmes that reflect national talent.

Bahrain TV gets a new look from this month as part of a massive government effort to ditch ‘canned programmes’ and launch fresh local programmes that reflect national talent. As part of these efforts, a group of Bahraini authors have been delegated to compile drama works for 2006-2007. Programmes for children are under preparation and will be launched after the summer. Likewise, BRTC has also been investing heavily in upgrading its existing broadcasting facilities and equipment. The whole effort is part of the government’s strategy to revamp Bahrain Radio and Television Corporation (BRTC), says acting chief executive, Shaikh Khalifa bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.” Currently, the BRTC is broadcasting programmes which convey the message of national unity,” says Shaikh Khalifa. But he added that fresh initiatives will open new horizons to creative and media people in Bahrain. He said BRTC is planning to conduct opinion polls and receive constructive criticism from media and viewers. “We will then take those suggestions into account and use them to further develop Bahrain TV,” he adds. He hinted at the possibility of seeking assistance from private companies in line with the country’s initiative to encourage the private sector, provided that the BRTC’s sovereignty would be maintained. Bahrain’s information minister, Dr Mohammed Abdulghaffar, is monitoring the whole project. BRTC is also looking to boost its advertising revenue with the revamp.
