Storage giant EMC has parted company with its regional partner STME after 16 years, citing “incompatible” regional strategies. According to customers contacted by IT Weekly, EMC had informed them of the move up to two weeks before. However, executives at STME claimed it only heard about the change in relationship when contacted by IT Weekly last week. STME deputy CEO Jocelyn Al Adwani claimed EMC had been trying to get the company to deal exclusively with the storage vendor. “They have been trying to convince us to actually drop our ties with all of our other partners and work exclusively with them, which we feel is very narrow,” stated Al Adwani. EMC Middle East general manager Mohammed Amin denied this. “It is up to any company to decide whom they are going to represent,” he said. “We came to a conclusion that EMC and STME have incompatible strategies. [To] the question that I was upset they represent other competition products, the answer is no,” he claimed. Clients of both STME and EMC have expressed anxiety over the situation. “Obviously if somebody has been looking after a key piece of your infrastructure for so long and then suddenly you get a new company or have to find a new company it is a matter of concern,” said an IT administrator at a major bank in the region. “The problem is if I can’t buy from them and I can’t upgrade my system, I can’t afford to have two different people looking after different parts of my infrastructure because it is too complicated,” said an IT manager at another large regional bank which uses EMC products. “When something goes wrong, whom do you go to? The guy who installed it or the guy who’s maintaining it?” he added. Amin maintained the dissolution of EMC’s partnership with STME would have no effect on customers. “They will never see any disturbances in the services. EMC is going to honour all its legal and support commitments to all its customers,” he said.
