Handset manufacturer Sony Ericsson has reported shipping 13.3 million handsets in 1Q06 to end March, a 41% increase compared to the same period last year, but down 17% sequentially. Sales for the quarter amounted to US$2.4 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 55%. Income before taxes was US$183 million, which represents a year-on-year increase of 115%. Net income more than tripled year-on- year to US$132 million. Average Selling Price (ASP) rose 4% to US$180, reflecting the greater proportion of higher-end products entering the product mix due to new phones for both KDDI and NTT DoCoMo in Japan. Growth in the global handset market continued to outpace earlier expectations, and Sony Ericsson now forecasts the global market outlook for 2006 to be over 900 million units. The company’s previous guidance was 10% growth versus estimated 2005 market volumes of about 780 million units.
