The high oil price season has heralded the phenomenon of manufacturing company expansions in the region, including many international suppliers based at the Jebel Ali Free Trade Zone in Dubai. Alderley, the British company that specialises in automated measurement and control systems for the metering of liquids and gas, expanded its Jebel Ali facilities to allow the company to meet the “increasing demand from the region,” according to Tony Shepherd, Alderley Group chairman and owner. The company had invited all its Middle East clients for the occasion, as the expansion meant that the capacity of the Alderley factory has doubled to incorporate a purpose-built wellhead assembly, test and service facility. Keith Stephen of the Alderely Saudi branch said the expansion meant that the company could now build some of the largest metering systems required in the Middle East and manufacture process solutions and wellhead control packages. The company is expected to soon create a replica of its UAE base in Saudi Arabia, as a large chunk of the company’s business comes from the Kingdom. Richard Makepeace, the British Ambassador to the UAE, was also present at the event and said he was happy that companies were finally making a bit of a “song and dance” about their facilities, as these were the nerve centres to the flourishing oil industry. He also said that the companies from the United Kingdom have begun setting up manufacturing facilities in the Middle East, instead of just using the location as a trading hub. “I am happy Alderley decided to make an event out of the expansion, as it shows how firms from the UK are increasing investment in the region, which is also because of the business that the region is offering us,” he said.
