Al Shafar General Contracting has taken the main construction package on the US $272 million (AED1 billion) Palm Golden Mile project. It is the latest in a string of Palm Jumeirah contract awards to have been announced in recent weeks as developer Nakheel strives to meet the project’s revised completion date. The Golden Mile is located along the centre of the trunk of the artificial island and will include retail, offices and residential units. The residential properties are located above the high-end retail offerings, comprising some 220 upscale stores and restaurants. “In line with our construction plans the main contract has been awarded to Al Shafar General Contracting and the contractor has started work on site. Planned completion for the project is still on track for the first quarter of 2008,” said George Khoury, senior vice president design & development at IFA Hotels & Resorts. There are 10 buildings within the Palm Golden Mile, and the bulk excavations, shoring and piling for buildings seven to 10 are now complete. NSCC/Soletanche Bachy took the contract for specialist works, worth approximately $16.5 million. The contractors have also completed a 3km reinforced concrete retaining wall surrounding the site. Around 900 bored piles have been driven through 20m of sand fill, previously placed by the dredging contractor whilst forming the Palm. The piles are anchored into the rock layer on the seabed. The basement levels on buildings seven to 10 are now being excavated and the dewatering equipment is reducing the seawater level inside the retaining wall by 9m. Last week CW revealed that Drake & Scull International had been awarded the $82 million contract for the MEP works on The Souq Residences, which also form part of the Golden Mile.
