As part of a major upgrade plan, Alsumaria TV, an Iraqi satellite television channel, has recently expanded its DaletPlus News Suite newsroom installation and deployed DaletPlus InterWeb to facilitate remote access for its reporters in the field. The channel also recently took delivery of a Miranda Imagestore 300 SD master control and channel branding processor as well as a Presmaster 2 master control panel playout server for its Lebanon-based playout operation. Alsumaria TV will use Miranda’s master control system for enhanced channel branding and more efficient station playout, with control via Harris automation and content running from a Seachange server. Lebanese systems integrator, Broadcast & Communication Systems (BCS), undertook this project. DaletPlus InterWeb will enable the channel’s reporters throughout Iraq to directly log into the DaletPlus News Suite newsroom computer system so as to browse incoming stories and contribute directly from the field. “We are impressed with the flexibility of our DaletPlus News Suite system,” says Saleh Al-Sahn, news editor at Alsumaria Television in Baghdad. “Adding editing seats and providing remote access to reporters in the field is almost as easy as connecting an additional workstation to a standard computer network. At Alsumaria TV, journalists use DaletPlus News Suite to browse agency feeds straight from their desktops. They can make shot selections on the fly using Dalet MediaLogger and share these with editors that put together packages using Dalet MediaCutter. Adobe Premiere Pro workstations are used for advanced editing. All media is stored centrally in native DV 25 and accessed across a Gigabit Ethernet network. In addition to production and play-out, DaletPlus News Suite is used by journalists and producers to browse incoming wire feeds, write scripts and build rundowns. Speaking about the Dalet installation, Nicolas Hans, product strategy director of Dalet says: “Alsumaria TV will reap the benefits of a digital newsroom based on open standards. With this new extension that runs on a secure private network, their newsroom can really open up: their reporters in the field can contribute using any web browser, from a cyber-café or using a B-GAN IP satellite uplink; it dramatically simplifies local news coverage.” Likewise, Alsumaria TV will use Miranda’s master control system for enhanced channel branding and more efficient station playout. “With the introduction of this new branding system, we will be making dramatic changes to the presentation of Alsumaria TV, with more sophisticated programme junction graphics and more engaging channel branding,” explains Jassem Al-Lami, head of operations at Alsumaria TV in Baghdad. The satellite television channel’s Imagestore 300 is fitted with the Easytext automated character for presenting news crawls, SMS viewer messages, and financial graphics such as stock market and exchange rate data. Easytext is a template-based character generator, which minimises manual intervention without compromising creativity. The Imagestore 300 is also equipped with a dual channel DVE, which provides compelling picture-in-picture effects for programme junctions, and ‘squeeze and reveal’ type promotional graphics. Alsumaria TV will also use the unit’s clock insertion capability for customised timer inserts, as well as the integral A/B video mixer and 16-channel audio mixer. The Presmaster 2 control panel, with integral colour touch screen, will act as a manual backup for the automation system, and will provide full control of video and audio mixing, DVEs and channel branding graphics. “Miranda has a strong reputation in the Middle East broadcast industry,” says Eng. Mazen Raouf at Alsumaria TV in Baghdad. “Reliability was key to the purchasing decision, and we were also impressed with the highly professional after-sales support that we received from Miranda’s local distributor, BCS.” The installation was completed last month.
