Arabtec aims to build on Linux solution

Arabtec, the UAE construction company whose current projects include the Burj Dubai, the tallest building in the world, migrates its mail servers to Linux.

Arabtec, the UAE construction company whose current projects include the Burj Dubai, the tallest building in the world, has migrated its mail servers to Linux. The construction company deployed Red Hat Enterprise Linux on the email server in its head office and on the DNS, proxy and firewall servers in the company’s remote sites. Since implementing Red Hat, it has seen a performance gain of 500% and approximately 35% improvement on total cost of ownership. Arabtec has also subscribed to the Red Hat Network, allowing its IT department to centralise and control patch management internally. The company’s previous email service was hosted and maintained by a third party company, but suffered from poor reliability and high costs. “Email is the backbone of our business,” said Muttia Marwan Al Khayyat, IT manager at Arabtec. “We rely on it for most of all communications and coordination with our clients, partners and staff, therefore we can’t afford any downtime.” As a construction company, Arabtec has to send large images and files containing architectural designs, which demand a high bandwidth. Karim Djerboa, business development manager for Opennet MEA, which deployed the solution with its local partner eComputers, said: “When we first visited Arabtec they had a scattered infrastructure of IT. They had a mail server based overseas which cost a lot, was slow and not reliable. “Now Arabtec has total ownership and total control of their mail server which is crucial for any company.” Arabtec is currently looking at the possibility of migrating all of its file servers, backup systems and desktops to Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
