Hyundai Engineering and Construction has clinched a US $700 million (AED2.5 billion) deal to build a new power station in Jebel Ali. And Italian engineering firm, Fisia Italimpianti, has struck a $550 million deal to construct a desalination plant on the same site. Both contracts form part of the Jebel Ali Power and Desalination Station ‘L’, phase two. The announcement comes as the first phase of the project, which was carried out by Mitsubishi, nears completion. The project is part of Dubai Water and Electricity Authority’s (DEWA) plans to boost the emirate’s electricity and water supplies. The power station will take 35 months to complete, while the desalination plant is expected to take two years. “We are aiming for an electricity production capacity of 1,200 megawatts,” said Joong Hyun Yoon, deputy project manager at Hyundai. Civil works for the desalination plant have already begun. Mitsubishi, Hyundai and Fisia Italimpianti also plan to bid for work on DEWA’s next power and desalination project, M-Station, also at Jebel Ali. The bid closing date is 24 June.
