An Alpine Bau Deutschland and Belbadi Engineering (Alpine-Belbadi) joint venture has picked up the main construction contract for the US $81.7 million (AED300 million) Cricket Stadium to be built in Dubai Sports City. It is the German contractor’s first major project award in Dubai. Construction will start later this month and is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2008. “We have been given a very short time to build the stadium but if we were not confident of being able to finish it on time we would not have accepted the contract in the first place,” said Thomas Schmidt, UAE general manager, Alpine Bau Deutschland. The stadium will have 25,000 seats, which will be expandable to 30,000, and will be built to cater to the media, including 98 seats for outdoor press writers, and seven commentary boxes with three speakers each for TV channels to broadcast live. The cricket stadium will be one of the most advanced of its kind in the world and the International Cricket Council (ICC), the world governing body of cricket, has been involved in all stages of the design process to ensure that the stadium meets the relevant specifications for hosting international cricket fixtures. U Balasubramaniam, CEO of Dubai Sports City said: “Since cricket is such a major event around the world, the need for proper media coverage is vital so we are paying close attention to this aspect. “Also, Dubai is planning to bid for the Champion’s Trophy to be held in 2008, so we are definitely going to finish in time for that. With the kind of infrastructure that Dubai now has and the facilities it can offer, I don’t see any reason why it won’t be selected as the desired venue for the trophy,” he said. The architect for the project is Gerkan Marg and Partner.
