An Abu Dhabi-based contractor has picked up one of the largest labour camp construction projects to have ever been awarded in the region. Al Masaood Bergum (AMB) has won a US $79 million (QR288 million) contract from Fluor Middle East to build temporary accommodation to house 5,500 construction workers in Qatar. The company has been given just 49 weeks to design and construct the 516 buildings that will house site workers employed on the Ras Gas K001 Camp in Ras Laffan Industrial City. Al Masaood Bergum will also be responsible for the construction of roads, water, sewerage treatment, leisure and communal facilities at the massive camp. Most of the buildings will be made at Al Masaood Bergum”s factory in Jebel Ali, while the bigger buildings, such as the mess hall, will be made in modular sections and then transported to and jointed on-site. The project will demand a workforce of up to 1,500. “This project is the largest contract of this kind to date to be awarded to AMB, and it is a sign of confidence in AMB”s ability to undertake fast-track turnkey camp projects,” said Steve McConnachie, general manager of AMB. AMB, a subsidiary of Al Masaood Group, has supplied pre-fabricated steel and timber frame buildings to projects across the Middle East since 1978. The company has worked on projects for companies including Siemens, Aldar Properties and Qatar Petroleum. Oil-related construction spending has created huge demand for camp facilities in Qatar, according to Jonathan Davies, AMB commercial manager. “The camp construction market in Qatar, and in the region as a whole, is extremely buoyant at the moment due to a shortage of existing camp capacity, and large spending on infrastructure and oil and gas projects,” he said.
