Dubai Municipality will invite bids for the construction of a new ‘book-shaped’ central library by the third quarter of this year. It is currently finalising designs for the library, which will be located on the banks of Al Mamzar Lagoons. Work on the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2007. According to Essa Al Maidour, assistant director general of Dubai Municipality for general projects affairs, the new building will include extended facilities. “We have chosen this beautiful location for the library, given the significance that a library is [designed] to enlighten the community members. “Moreover, a less congested area means that people can come to the library and enjoy reading in a relaxed environment, while enjoying the scenic location,” he said. He also said that the preliminary designs for the new premises have been selected through a contest of internationally renowned and experienced consultants, and that these designs show a book-shaped building that reflects the library’s main theme. “The main activities of the library will concentrate on the middle part of the building where natural lighting from all parts would light up the area. “The basement will be dedicated for parking, which will accommodate as many as 1000 cars. “Other facilities of the central library will include administrative and technical sections, reading halls, service areas, a children’s library, a business library, an exhibitions and conference centre and training halls,” he said. He added that the new library will contain over 1.72 million books and other library materials including CDs and audio-video cassettes. He also said that the building will be constructed according to high international standards and specifications, with a focus on electronic and audiovisual facilities.
