The UAE Supreme Committee for the Supervision of the Telecommunications Sector today signed a full-services telecoms licence with Emirates Integrated Telecommunication Company (EITC). The licence grants the right to EITC to install, operate, and manage a public telecoms network providing services across the United Arab Emirates. The licence grant was inked by Sultan bin Saeed Al-Mansoori, chairman of the Supreme Committee. Mohammed Nasser Al-Ghanim, director general and member of the board of directors of the TRA, and Osman Sultan, CEO of EITC, also signed the licence jointly. The licence states that EITC is approved to offer fixed and mobile telecoms services in the UAE. It also states that EITC can deliver international calls and internet services and other services in the future after it receives Supreme Committee approval. According to the licence agreement, EITC will pay Dhs124.5 million (US$34 million) as a licence fee. The licence can be renewed annually for Dhs1 million. Incumbent operator Etisalat will also be granted a licence due to be signed by the TRA before the end of this month. “Introducing a second telecoms operator enables the UAE government to realise its vision to introduce competition to one of the most significant, dynamic, and vital sectors in the country,” says Al-Mansoori. “Introducing a second operator to the market will drive both companies to bring in cutting-edge technologies and deliver unsurpassed services,” explains the TRA’s Al-Ghanim. EITC’s CEO Osman Sultan said that the signing today of the new licence marked the beginning of a new era for telecommunications in the UAE. “It is an important day for EITC, and for all customers in the country who will have the freedom of choice in their selection of a telecommunications company. EITC’s mission is articulated towards offering unique customer experience, being the employer of choice for the best local talent and creating value for our shareholders thus contributing to the development of the community at large.”
