Batelco has promised its internet users the cheapest and fastest service in the GCC. The Bahraini incumbent made the announcement in light of recently conducted customer research into the satisfaction of its broadband customers, which revealed that almost 53% expected faster access and thought the current rates too high. Internet rates are being cut by a third, claims Batelco CEO Peter Kaliaropoulos, adding that operator intends to cover every Bahrain household with its broadband coverage by 2008. A new internet package of BHD10 (US$26.50) is currently awaiting the approval of Bahrain’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, he says. Present rates for Batelco’s 128k 500Mb services stands at BHD15 (US$40) per month, while the 256k 5Gb offerings is BHD30 (US$80). According to Kaliaropoulos, the total number of internet subscribers in Bahrain stands at just 50,000, a figure that he says has not grown for the last two years. He puts the low subscriber rate on high access rates, but also an increasing amount of illegal customers. “There are about 18,000 illegal customers, who share their lines with other customers,” he claims. The TRA has been notified of this practice, which Kaliaropoulos says costs the incumbent about BHD6.48 million (US$17.2 million) a year.
