The Abu Dhabi Police and UK Forensic Science Service (FSS) have signed a contract worth almost US$2 million for the rehabilitation and development of Abu Dhabi Police criminal evidence laboratory. British Royal, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, attended the signing of the agreement between Lieutenant-General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Interior, and Alan Matthews, communications director of FSS. The ceremony, held at the General Directorate of the Abu Dhabi Police, was also attended by Abullah Al Masoud, speaker of the national consultative council (NCC), Major-General Saif Al Shaafar, under-secretary of the Ministry of Interior, and a number of senior officers. Prince Andrew, who was on a three-day visit to the UAE, attended the ceremony in his capacity as the United Kingdom’s special representative for foreign trade and investment. During his visit, Prince Andrew was briefed on the latest technologies adopted by the Abu Dhabi Police, including the iris scanning capabilities, the unified database, and e-services. He also visited the camel doping laboratory, the criminal evidence laboratory, the DNA laboratory, and the anti-drugs section. Commenting on the event, Prince Andrew said he was delighted at what he called the “first class partnership” between the UK Forensic Science Service Laboratory and the Abu Dhabi Police. He also expressed hope that this contract would be the beginning of a “long and developing relationship” between the UAE and Britain. Under the contract, the FSS will provide training and upgrade the efficiency of the Criminal Evidence Laboratory staff, upgrade regulations and standards of the criminal and forensic labs, and implement the latest procedures. The contract will last for two years and will include 1,200 working and training hours.
