Etisalat chairman and CEO Mohammad Omran has told CommsMEA that the new CEO of the UAE incumbent’s international business is Jamal Al Jarwan, who returns to Etisalat after a stint as chief commercial officer of mobile satellite services provider Thuraya. Al Jarwan’s appointment, which Omran confirms took place at the beginning of January, fills a gap left by the departure of Etisalat International’s first CEO, Obaid bin Mes’har, who vacated the position in November, under a cloud. It has been suggested that disagreements between Etisalat and the Pakistani government over the acquisition of a 26% stake in Pakistan Telecom (PakTel) last summer resulted in bin Mes’har’s removal. Etisalat is said to have offered far too much for the stake in PakTel, pledging US$2.6 billion for the asset, at a significant premium to the final bids submitted by the other two last remaining short-listed bidders, China Mobile and Singapore Telecommunications. “(Al Jarwan) used to be chief commercial officer of Thuraya. We have taken him back from Thuraya and he is now the head of international operations at Etisalat. He started from the beginning of the month (January),” Omran told CommsMEA Etisalat International was established early last year to spearhead the UAE operator’s foreign investment strategy and has gone on to blaze an exciting trail of acquisitions, including positions including negotiating positions in Sudan, West Africa, Saudi Arabia and Tanzania and now Pakistan. Omran also confirmed that Etisalat was set to participate in award processes in both Tunisia as well as Egypt.
