EMEA tops global PC market

The market for PCs in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region surpassed the US in terms of shipments for the first time in full year 2005, according to preliminary statistics from the numbercrunchers at Gartner. A bumper fourth quarter in EMEA saw some 20 million units shipped in the region.

The market for PCs in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region surpassed the US in terms of shipments for the first time in full year 2005, according to preliminary statistics from the numbercrunchers at Gartner. A bumper fourth quarter in EMEA saw some 20 million units shipped in the region, pushing the total shipments for full year 2005 to 72.6 million units. In comparison, the US market recorded PC shipments of 67.2 million units. “The EMEA region finished the year with a strong fourth quarter in 2005, as more than 20 million units were shipped, a 17.2% increase from the fourth quarter of 2004,” said Ranjot Atwal, senior analyst for Gartner’s computing platform group in EMEA. “The consumer market did well in the region, especially in the mobile PC market where significant promotions in all countries led to exceptional demand.” Demand for notebook PCs also played its part in driving growth across many regions. “Mobile growth came to some extent at the expense of desk-based PCs,” said Charles Smulders, VP of Gartner’s computing platforms worldwide group. “Emerging regions had steady desk-based PC growth, however it could not offset the very weak desk-based PC growth in the mature regions.” Gartner’s PC shipment research includes desktops, notebooks and x86 servers. In total, the research house estimated that some 218.5 million units were shipped globally in 2005 with EMEA accounting for 33.2% of that total, the US 30.7%, Asia-Pacific 19.6%, Latin America 6.7% and Canada 3%. Asia-Pacific and Latin America were the fastest growing regions in the world, with shipments soaring 26% year-on-year for full year 2005. From the vendor perspective, Dell maintained top spot as the number one player in the global market, boosting its PC shipments 18.6% in 2005 to 36.8 million units — 16.8% of the global market. HP picked up second spot with shipments of 31.8 million in 2005, with Lenovo grabbing third place as it shifted just over 15 million units. Acer stood out as the fastest growing A-brand vendor in 2005, outstripping the overall market growth rate of 15.3%. The Taiwanese vendor’s unit shipments rocketed 58.1% year-on-year in 2005 to 10.15 million units, putting it in fourth position ahead of Fujitsu Siemens in fifth.
