The number of construction workers killed in Dubai site accidents rose sharply last year, to 39. And 22 of the deaths involved falls from height, according to figures just out from Dubai Municipality (DM). The number of deaths increased 14.7% on 2004 figures. Injuries on site also rose sharply, with 175 recorded, compared to 105 the year before. Despite the increase, Fawzi Al Shehi, head of engineering supervision section at DM, said that the increase in construction activity accounted for the increased accident rate. “The number of construction sites in Dubai has doubled in the last two years, whereas the number of accidents has only slightly increased,” he said. The statistics do not include free zones, which are not obliged to provide data on construction accidents to DM.
