The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) is hoping to expand the presence of its testing and type-approval facilities across the region, having welcomed a TRA delegation from Oman to Etisalat’s UAELab. According to acting senior engineer at UAELab Yahya Mohammed Al Kamali, the UAE TRA initiated the visit, in its efforts to assist other regulatory authorities in the region. “The UAELab has been featured in the agenda because it has the experience of testing and type-approving telecoms devices for the Etisalat network, and comparing them to international standards for approximately five years.” Al Kamali indicated that the UAELab was looking to position itself as the region’s central testing facility. “We look forward to the UAELab becoming the sole point of testing and calibration for devices imported to Oman and other GCC states, and to perfecting a unified approach to standards and processes across the region.” A presentation was made to the delegation outlining the facility’s processes for the testing and type-approval for various telecom devices, alongside activities such as reporting and test certificate issuance. All aspects of type-approval of telecoms equipment were covered, including standards implementation, keeping up with international trends and testing devices for GSM, GPRS and landline networks. Each month, UAELab test various new devices, ensuring they are fully compatible with international standards and the Etisalat network. In September 2005 Etisalat signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the UAE TRA under which the UAELab would work closer with the authority to ensure that all equipment available in the UAE would be certified to the most relevant standards.
