Hard drive vendor Western Digital has unveiled plans to boost its Middle East and North Africa channel even further in 2006. With Seagate now acquiring Maxtor, Western Digital will face a renewed challenge from the enlarged entity as it looks to maintain its market leadership in the region. Western Digital will pay special attention to channel development in North Africa, focusing its efforts on fast-growing markets such as Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. The vendor has also underlined its intentions to strengthen its channel-to-market in key GCC markets even further during 2006. “Western Digital’s steady growth in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region encouraged us to further expand our operations in the region,” said Hafeez Khawaja, senior regional director for the Middle East, Africa and South Asia at Western Digital. “We will enter new, untapped regional markets, and at the same time strengthen operations in existing ones.” “At the centre of Western Digital expansion strategy are the rapidly evolving and promising markets, such as Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Nigeria and Kenya. The former three have high IT literacy levels,” he added. The vendor’s Dubai-based office will support operations in Africa through the provision of marketing support. In addition, Western Digital also plans to expand its SelectWD channel loyalty programme to these markets and provide RMA support through a local distributor. Western Digital recently appointed King Line Computer (KLC) as a direct distributor of its hard drives in Algeria — its first African distributor appointment outside of Egypt. “Our partnership with KLC will help us efficiently implement our business strategies for the Algerian market,” added Khawaja. “KLC has a very impressive track record, and boasts a distribution channel known for its wide reach and efficiency.” Alongside its Dubai-based regional distributors such as FDC, eSys and Tech Data, Western Digital has already made in-country appointments in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan and Turkey. “We are committed to supporting our distribution partners and helping boost their efficiency,” added Khawaja. “Western Digital has been participating in major trade shows alongside its distributors, besides organising various workshops and technical seminars.”
