Al Naboodah Contracting is in poll position to take the contract for the third phase of the Dubai Outer Bypass. The contractor submitted a bid of US $68.3 million (AED251 million) for the job, which aims to alleviate Dubai’s growing traffic problems. Also in the race to build the road are Joannou & Paraskevaides (J&P) and Bin Hafeez. J&P has submitted a bid of $78.4 million while Bin Hafeez came in with a price of $85.4 million. The contract covers infrastructure and road works and is expected to take two years to complete — allowing Sharjah traffic to bypass the overloaded Sheikh Zayed Road. “The package is for the construction of 25km to 30km of roads,” said a spokesperson for the Cypriot contractor, J&P. According to contractor sources, the submission date for the tenders was extended, in order to encourage more companies to participate in the project. “They were expecting more people to bid for the project, so they extended the submission dates to give companies more time to assess the documents and then submit a bid,” said the source. The third phase of Dubai’s Outer Bypass Road will involve the construction of a 23-km four-lane dual carriage way linking the Dubai-Al Ain Road with the Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road. The main feature of this part of the project will be the replacement of the existing bridge on the Dubai-Al Ain Road, with a full clover-leaf interchange that will ensure free flow of traffic in all directions. The fourth and final phase of the bypass will see the extension of the road from Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road to the Abu Dhabi borders. The Dubai Outer Bypass Road is an arterial dual carriage way that will run parallel to the Emirates Road and the Sheikh Zayed Road.
