ATi has launched a new family of GPUs called the X1000 series. This includes the Radeon X1800 XT, which ATi claims is the fastest graphics processor on the market. According to the firm, its new X1800XT GPU gives competitive gamers and PC enthusiasts top performance in the most demanding shader-intensive environments. Cards sporting the X1800XT GPU include either 256MB of 512MB of memory and are expected to retail for US $499 and $549 respectively. “The Radeon X1800 was designed to be and it is the best. In terms of gaming performance, it is the fastest; in terms on image quality, it is the best looking; in terms of features, it is the richest,” stated Richard Huddy, ISV relations manager ATi EMEA. “We are excited to be introducing this product in the Middle East, a region that is constantly developing and embracing new technology.” Apart from its high-end X1800 model, ATi’s X1000 family also includes a mid-range series known as the X1600 and the X1300 for budget buyers. All the chipsets support Avivo technology for advanced video playback and all PCI Express based cards are Crossfire (dual-graphics cards) compatible. Crossfire-compatible motherboards are already available in the region from motherboard manufacturers such as Asus, DFI and MSI. Unlike ATi’s previous GPUs, the new X1000 family fully supports the Shader 3.0 model as used by developers when coding games. “We included the Shader 3.0 model for two main reasons,” explained Huddy. “Firstly, with support for the latest shader model, it is easier for developers to code games and make them look better. Secondly, Microsoft’s Windows Vista supports Shader model 4.0. Therefore, we need to upgrade our GPUs to support 3.0 first so that the transition to 4.0 will be a smooth process.” Cards based on the X1000 should be available in stores across the region by the end of this month. At the X1000 launch, ATi also announced plans to sponsor a LAN gaming event. This Counterstrike 1.3 tournament will take place in Dubai on the December 22 at the city’s Knowledge Village. The first place winner stands to win $1362, while the runner-up will be awarded $817. Gamers interested in participating in the event can do so by registering at www.tbreak.com/ati from December 15 onwards.
