CA planning future SAP collaborations

The multi-million dollar deployment of SAP’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) system across CA’s global operations could lead to the two software giants working together more closely in future, one of CA’s senior IT executives said last week.

THE MULTI-million dollar deployment of SAP’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) system across CA’s global operations could lead to the two software giants working together more closely in future, one of CA’s senior IT executives said last week. Philip Stunt, CA’s vice president of international IT and CIO of EMEA told IT Weekly that the two firms are in talks over ways to jointly develop their respective ERP and enterprise IT management products. CA, formerly known as Computer Associates, is currently deploying SAP’s ERP system across its organisation, at a cost of around US$100 million, covering every aspect from HR and finance to sales and shipping. This will standardise its busin- ess processes globally and create a central system from which staff can access information such as sales figures. Stunt identified a strong synergy between SAP and CA pro-ducts. “We want to work with SAP going forward,” he said. “We want to look at how an ERP solution could work with the enterprise management system that CA offers. There is not much of an overlap but there are a lot of opportunities to work together,” he added. While he said it was still too early to talk about joint development of products, he added that the two firms would “look at what SAP offers, in terms of ERP, and what CA offers, in terms of enterprise architecture. These are complementary processes.” For instance, when a new employee joins a firm, his details would be entered into the SAP HR component, before being set up with a desktop using CA’s Unicenter product. By linking the two more clos-ely, more details could be shared across an organisation abo-ut employees, Stunt explained. CA expects the implementation of the SAP system to generate 25-30% cost savings in its back office processes, as well as profits resulting from improved business intelligence. “This will be a complete end- to-end solution for us — from the CRM aspect right the way through to procurement and payment,” said Stunt. CA chose SAP’s ERP system over Oracle’s in its evaluation because it said SAP would better meet its requirements. “We did a long and intensive evaluation of Oracle and SAP. It came down to their ability to provide an end-to-end integrated solution,” Stunt revealed. “There’s a lot of strengths in Oracle but we felt SAP was a better fit within our organisation and for what we wanted to do,” he added. The first test phase is currently taking place in the US and deployment will take place there in April 2006. Deployment in EMEA will start October 2006 and will take place in three phased deployments.
