The inagural Digtal Business Channel Middle East and Africa (MEA) event kicked off last night in Fujeirah, UAE, opened by Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Saif Al Sharqi, head of Fujeirah’s government electronic department. The three day conference features over 150 selected value added resellers (VARs) and solutions providers from over 20 countries, meeting with 30 vendors from across the region to discuss future business opportunities. “We are overwhelmed with the level of response from the channel,” said Farouk Hemraj, CEO at Distree Events, the organisers of the show. “This is the first ever event in this region that is 100% dedicated to the business to business channel in MEA. Our formula for these events is very focused and hence very successful.” The event features vendors including HP, AMD, Toshiba, APC, Brother, Acer, Sun Microsystems, 3Com, Sony Storage, Avocent, MGE, NEC, Sky, Epson and Sonicwall among others. “Return on investment from this kind of event is fantastic. The type of people here are all the type of companies that we want to talk to. To travel to 20 countries and have meetings with the same number of customers would cost us ten times as much,” said Pierre Brunswick regional sales director, Russia, CIS, Middle East and Africa at AMD. “We expect around 300 people representing both vendors and VARs to attend this event,” continued Hemraj. According to Distree the VARs attending the event represent about US$3bn of annual turnover and 86% of these VARs sell to large corporate accounts, 82% to mid-sized enterprises and 72% to small businesses. Digtal Business Channel MEA is the second event for this region organised by Distree Events, after a successful event for the retail channel in May 2005.
