Business intelligence solutions distributor BSG has dumped Business Objects from its vendor portfolio and taken a strategic decision to push Cognos solutions instead. BSG had been the only platinum distributor for Business Objects in the Middle East from 1995 until 2003 when Business Objects purchase of Crystal Decisions resulted in a dual regional distribution model. “We have now decided to broaden our position as the leading provider of business intelligence solutions,” said Nasser Tufail, managing director at BSG. “Next generation business intelligence software has to be based on a single server architecture, combining reporting, analysis, event management, metrics, scorecarding and ETL in a zero-footprint unified environment. The solutions also have to work with any kind of relational and multi-dimensional data.” “We are delighted to have one of the foremost BI solution providers, with unrivalled experience and pedigree in the region, join with Cognos to serve our customers’ BI requirements,” added David Brierley, regional manager at Cognos Middle East, Greece and Turkey. “BSG’s market presence, its demonstrable BI expertise and domain knowledge is well recognised. We are excited about the opportunity to leverage the functionality of Cognos’ products with BSG’s expertise,” Brierley added. BSG’s customer base includes Mashreq Bank, Saudi American Bank, Qatar Petrochemical Company, ADNOC, Standard Chartered Bank, Al Marai Dairy, Commercial Bank of Dubai, National Bank of Dubai, Occidental Petroleum, L’Oreal and Saudi Telecom. “More and more organisations are viewing metrics and performance management to be increasingly important to their overall business intelligence strategy. Customers now need scalable, enterprise-wide solutions. Teaming up with the world’s leading business intelligence and corporate performance management vendor will help us address our customer needs better. BSG intends to work closely with all our customers to ensure a smooth transition and look forward to continuing our association with them,” added Tufail. According to data from IDC, the total Gulf market for business intelligence solutions is worth between US$32m and US$33m per annum with the UAE and Saudi Arabia contributing some US$25m of this total. Double digit percentage sales growth is expected as more and more enterprises assess the advantages of investing in business intelligence solutions. “In order to continue to serve the best interests of our customers, we realised that we needed to round out our business intelligence solutions with leading-edge, tightly integrated corporate performance management, budgeting, planning, forecasting and consolidation offerings. We looked at the new Cognos 8 business intelligence and it provides the most comprehensive organic integration of all of Cognos’ software applications. Cognos 8 business intelligence operates on a single Web services based architecture, delivering the complete range of functionality and capable of addressing every customer requirement,” concluded Tufail.
