Big guns in a battle for Garhoud bridge

Multiple contractors fight to deliver 14 lanes on one of Dubai’s worst congestion zones

Wade Adams, Dutco Balfour Beatty and J&P are among the contractors chasing the contract to widen Garhoud Bridge in Dubai — thought to be worth more than US $120 million (AED450 million). Six Construct and Bin Hafeez are also understood to be chasing the challenging deal, aimed at alleviating chronic traffic congestion across the Creek. Tenders are due on the 4th December 2005 and the project is expected to cost between $120 million and $140 million. Construction will start in the first quarter of 2006. “Dubai Municipality has invited a few contractors, including Wade Adams, Dutco Balfour Beatty and J&P to tender for the project,” a source told CW. The new Al Garhoud Bridge will have seven lanes in each direction in addition to a walkway for pedestrians. A J&P estimator said: “We are planning to participate in this contract.” Dubai Municipality plans to widen the bridge as part of its efforts to ease traffic congestion in the city and is part of the Municipality’s five-year plan to ensure smooth traffic flow. In addition to this, a further bridge is due to be constructed over the Dubai Creek. The bridge will be the fourth to be built and the fifth crossing linking Deira and Bur Dubai. It will be built between Al Maktoum Bridge and Al Shindagha Tunnel, and will link Omar Bin Al Khattab Road in Deira to Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road in Bur Dubai. Another crossing over the creek at Ras Al Khor is currently under construction and will link Al Rashidiya to Bur Dubai. The existing two bridges and the tunnel have the capacity of handling 38 000 vehicles per hour. With the construction of two new bridges, the capacity will increase to more than 70 000 vehicles per hour.
