Samsonite has awarded a multi-year contract to PWC Logistics to control the transportation, warehousing and final distribution of its products destined to Africa, the Middle East and other regional markets. PWC Logistics will handle the luggage-maker’s freight shipments from Asia to Jebel Ali, as well as distributing the goods to retail facilities throughout the region. “This agreement represents an important shift in logistics strategy for Samsonite,” said Dr. Ramesh Tainwala, Samsonite South Asia’s chief operating officer. “We have moved this operation from India to Jebel Ali in order to take advantage of the geographic positioning of Jebel Ali, the ease of doing business there, and its proximity to the markets we serve.” Samsonite will continue to run its regional operations from India, but it will be able to use PWC’s technology to trace and manage its stock levels and movements in Dubai. “Our web-enabled solution provides realtime inventory visibility and control, enabling Samsonite to manage its inventory remotely from offices in India,” explained Essa Al-Saleh, PWC Logistics’s managing director, business development. “In addition, by having operations in both Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, we can provide Samsonite with end-to-end control of its supply chain,” he added. Separately, PWC Logistics Oman has signed a lease agreement with the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE) in Sohar and announced plans to sign a lease with PEIE’s industrial estate in Salalah later in the year. “In order to be able to handle our fast moving consumer goods business in the area, we needed land that was accessible to the local area and free of port restrictions. In this regard, PEIE’s Sohar industrial estate fitted the bill,” commented Chris Clark, PWC Logistics’ country manager in Oman.
