Western Digital has added King Line Computer (KLC) as a direct distributor of its hard drives in Algeria. The company is the first in-country distribution partner the vendor has appointed in Africa outside of Egypt. “The literacy level is very high in Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco, and Western Digital sees these as the three key countries. Although Egypt is already a developed market these smaller countries have less investment, but fantastic potential. KLC is a very good, very professional company. We have been talking to them for years, and have decided that now is the time for us to go ahead and sign them as a distributor,” said Hafeez Khawaja, Western Digital senior regional director, Middle East, Africa and South Asia. The hard drive giant is keen to drive new business in the Africa region and says that it won’t stop at the appointment of KLC and is in talks with potential partners in Morocco and Tunisia. According to Khawaja, Western Digital prefers to take a hands-on approach, visiting potential markets and meeting with the local companies face to face, to gain a feel for these markets. “We are looking at each and every opportunity in the MEA countries. We have a very good presence in the markets we operate in within the GCC, now we need to push out of this area and capture new markets to take it to the next level. That’s why we are reinforcing our team, our investments and trying to identify in each country what will make the difference, from a service point of view and a local contact point of view,” adds Khawaja. Through its agreement with KLC, Western Digital will provide hard drives that will be integrated into a number of PCs for both home and government projects. KLC also has a sister company which assembles PCs. Western Digital currently has only one other in country distributor in Africa, named North Africa Distribution, serving the Egyptian market. The Africa region is also served indirectly by a number of Western Digital’s other partners.
