The national Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD) has become the first bank in the region to implement the RSA SecurID solution to protect customers using its internet banking service. Its 19,000 online customers have each been given a token bearing a digital security number, which changes every 60 seconds and which they can use to access their online banking details. RSA SecurID is a bundled solution, which includes the RSA SecurID Appliance, RSA SecurID tokens, RSA Authentication Manager software and hardware/software support. NBAD chose to implement the solution amid mounting concerns over security vulnerabilities and the rise of phishing and spyware attacks. It believes that the RSA SecurID tokens will restore customers’ confidence in online banking. “Recent high profile security breaches mean that awareness of the potential risks of banking online is high and many users are nervous of using the internet to conduct financial transactions,” said Srood Sherif, head of the information technology division at NBAD. “We wanted to provide additional security and peace of mind for our customers, and believe that using strong two-factor authentication such as RSA SecurID technology is one of the best ways of achieving that.” The bank decided to implement RSA SecurID for its retail customers after successfully implementing the technology for its corporate customers in 2001. The second phase of the project will be to use RSA SecurID to allow employees of the bank to securely log in to internet and e-mail applications when out of the office. “Many organisations are realising that static passwords simply cannot provide adequate protection against internet crime,” said Miles Rippon, sales director at RSA.
