In a bid to capitalise on the growing demand for LCDs in the region, LG has launched a 55-inch Flatron LCD monitor, which it claims is the world’s biggest LCD TV. The XGA LCD offers a contrast ratio of 600:1 and a native resolution of 1,366 x 768, which LG believes is a strong resolution for those who intend to use the monitor as a public display device in shopping malls, retail outlets and offices. LG claims its Flatron models are equipped with the world’s first picture enhancing chip for LCD monitors, which is designed to boast overall image quality. This 55-inch LCD also supports IPS (in-plane switching) technology, which results in 176-degree viewing angles, while its response time is pegged at 12ms (milliseconds). The firm seems very confident regarding the growth of the LCD market in the region. According to LG, the fact that LCD monitors emit no radiation, unlike CRTs, is a major attraction for consumers. The firm also states that because many regional distributors and systems integrators are currently bundling LCD monitors with branded and non-branded PCs, this is also driving up sales. “The demand for LCD monitors is growing exponentially in the Middle East. Industry analysts credit LCDs’ improved performance and sharper brightness and contrast levels as the key reasons for their strong performance,” stated C H Lee, president, LG Electronics Gulf FZE. “According to IDC reports in the Middle East, LCD monitors passed a watershed stage in February 2003, when sales surpassed those of traditional CRT monitors that previously dominated the market.” LG’s newest addition – released officially at Gitex 2005 – is retailing for $12,234 and is currently in stores across the region.
