Millennium & Copthorne Hotels has announced the signing of a management contract for a new 250-room hotel in Doha, the group’s first hotel in Qatar. The Millennium Hotel Doha will open in September 2006 and be located in the diplomatic and commercial area of the city adjacent to a park and a major new shopping mall. “We have, in recent years, been successful in entering the Middle Eastern market, particularly in Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi,” Tony Potter, CEO, Millennium & Copthorne Hotels, told Hotelier Middle East. “In order to further extend our coverage of the area we are particularly interested in Egypt and Qatar. This is from a perspective of recognising the importance of having hotels in these locations and also for the outbound marketing and sales which we can derive from such locations. The Qatar property is a commercially driven hotel and as such our main markets will be individual corporates and meetings.” Meeting facilities at the property will include a 354m² banqueting hall and pre-function area, and three conference and meeting rooms. ”The Qatar economy is one that is relatively booming and considered to be able to sustain large development in the future, which will require an improved hotel supply,” Potter added. In July, Millennium & Copthorne Hotels opened the Coral Beach Diving Hotel, the first resort in Egypt’s newest resort area, Port Ghalib.
