Kane’s tunnel tigers target Dubai Metro

Tunnelling specialist establishes UAE base to compete for upcoming Metro packages

Donegal’s world-famous ‘tunnel tigers’ are set to descend on Dubai in pursuit of contracts on the US $3.4 billion (AED12.5 billion) Dubai Metro project. Tunnellers from the north-western Irish county have gained a reputation across the global construction industry for their work on big tunnelling jobs around the world. And mass transport specialist Kane Tunnelling is the first contractor with origins in the county to set up shop in Dubai, with the aim of chasing work on the Metro tunnel packages that will be let during the next year. Kane Tunnelling arrives in Dubai straight from Hong Kong, where the contractor has been working on the recently-opened Disneyland project. The firm also carried out sub-contracts on London’s Jubilee Line and the Hi Van Tunnel in Vietnam. Director Dermot Kane said: “We have established a presence here and hope to pick up some of the shaft and tunnel work on the Dubai Metro project.” A Mitsubishi-led consortium won the contract to build the mass transit system in June. The consortium also includes Japanese partners Obayashi and Kajima and Turkish contractor Yapi Merkezi. The Dubai Metro will include both open-cut and TBM work, but most of the tunnelling will be handled directly by the consortium. There will be a total of ten underground stations along the route and an underground section running underneath the Creek. A spokesman said: “We will do most of the tunnelling ourselves but we may need sub-contractors for some of the excavation work.” The Dubai Metro will have two lines, with the ‘Red’ line running from Rashidya Station to Jebel Ali Station and the ‘Green’ line running from the Dubai Airport Free Zone to Dubai Health Care City.
