Football fever hit Gitex yesterday after UAE striker Ismael Mattar paid a visit to Avaya’s stand to promote the firm’s sponsorship of next year’s World Cup finals. Mattar, who was named FIFA’s best young player in 2003, kicked up a stir at the hall six stand, treating visitors to a display of soccer wizardry. Photographers and TV camera crews mobbed the footie ace as he signed balls and tossed them into the highly excited crowd. On several occasions people fell to the floor during the melee, as they clambered to get hold of the autographed prizes. Avaya staff even tooted on whistles in an attempt to recreate the atmosphere of a football stadium. Mattar also presented one lucky Avaya customer with a pair of tickets to the quarterfinals of the World Cup. Ahmed Said Ahmed Al-Shanfari from Oman said he was “delighted” to have won the draw, which the company has been running throughout the exhibition. “Ismael Mattar has become one of the UAE and Middle East region’s leading strikers,” says Nidal Abou-Ltaif, managing director at Avaya, Middle East & North Africa, which is the official converged communication provider for the World Cup. “Bringing Ismael to Gitex lends some homegrown star-power to our sponsorship of the finals,” he adds.
