His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Defence Minister, officially opened the 25th Gitex yesterday. He also took a tour of the halls, and His Highness appeared to be impressed with the wide range of solutions on display, stopping at a number of stands along the way. In particular, His Highness spent time with UAE stalwarts such as Dubai Internet City, which has its own community zone in the concourse area, and Etisalat, which has a massive stand in hall seven. However, Sheikh Mohammed also made time for the smaller exhibitors. On the Microsoft stand, His Highness stopped to talk with staff from mobile phone software developer City of Chances Infotech, a firm founded with the help of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Establishment for Young Business Leaders initiative. The support of Sheikh Mohammed has been integral to the continued growth of Gitex, which celebrates its silver anniversary this week. This year, His Highness has had even more to see, as the event covers 29,000 square metres and features around 1100 exhibitors. “There has been an increased number of companies that want to appear at the show this year,” says DWTC director general, Helal Saeed Khalfan Al Marri. “The reason for this is that many firms targeting the Middle East IT market start out at Gitex.”
